The period of knighthood was also referred to the age of chivalry. The word chivalry is derived from the French word chevalier which means"horseman". Knights were trained to engage in combat while on horseback. The term chivalry, however, became synonymous with the strict moral code of conduct to which knights were suppose to adhere.
